Our new look competition has a great focus on personal development and fostering community involvement.
The Pittsworth Showgirl and Rural Ambassador competitions will no longer see compulsory fundraising, instead will encourage our young people of the community to get in and 'get their hands dirty' in preparation for and during the show. This includes catering events, working bees, whole-show society meetings, the showgirl launch and development day.
Showgirl Competition
A little bit about the state wide competition....
The Showgirl Competition aims to find a young rural woman to act as an ambassador for rural Queensland and Queensland Agricultural Shows, with her role involving many official and informal duties both at Royal Queensland and during her travel’s interstate and overseas.
The Showgirl Competition is not a Beauty Pageant or Fashions in the Field racewear competition. Most importantly the Showgirls must have a genuine interest in, and knowledge of rural Queensland. The Competition encourages the participation and subsequent awareness of the rural women’s contribution and involvement in both local communities and rural Queensland as a whole.
This year the Queensland Country Life Showgirl Awards celebrates 37 years since its inception in 1983. The Competition has come a long way, with the Awards today providing an opportunity to excel in leadership, community involvement, professional development and confidence. It has given many women across Queensland to become involved in or increase their involvement in one of the greatest traditions of rural Australia – their Local Show.
The contestants are judged on personality, confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, show knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech. Finalists are also asked to demonstrate knowledge of their local community and current affairs. Apart from their potential ambassadorial qualities, contestants are also judged on their involvement in and experience of agricultural shows .
The Showgirl Awards are an excellent opportunity for young Queensland women to become more involved in their local show and their community.

Rural Ambassador
The Marsh Rural Ambassador Awards are open to males and females, twenty to thirty years of age who have a strong commitment to the rural industries and an involvement and passion for the Agricultural Show movement.
The aim of the Marsh Rural Ambassador Awards is to highlight the importance of young people in rural and regional Queensland, in particular those associated with the Agricultural Show movement. The award identifies those people actively involved in their local Show, who have a sound knowledge of current rural issues affecting their local areas, Queensland and Australia and have a strong affiliation with agriculture.
The award seeks young people who symbolise the rural spirit – people with vitality who are forward thinking and with a passion for the land and local agricultural shows.
The competition is run on four levels. The local Show winner progresses to a Sub-Chamber final (Toowoomba) where the winner competes in the State Final held during the Royal Queensland Show (EKKA). The winner of the State Final then competes at the National Final held at a State Royal Show. This is a national competition, but with New Zealand joining us in 2008 it has expanded to international status.
